Implementation of a network of health promoters in Tijuana en Ciudad Juárez
A total of 21 people were identified and selected, representing diverse professional backgrounds (psychologists, nurses, social workers, and others), and with experience or interest in working with migrants. Efforts were made to ensure that migrants themselves were included among them.
The promotores from Tijuana and Ciudad Juárez received integrative training encompassing:
Migration and health
Mental health
Sexual and reproductive health
Communicable diseases
Interculturality
Working in migrant shelters, community centers, clinics, and other spaces, the promoters carried out a community assessment to identify the main challenges migrants face in accessing health services, as well as other issues related to health care. Based on this assessment, they selected and implemented 1,433 preventive actions, such as:
Awareness campaigns for mammograms and Pap smears
Prenatal support for migrant women
Navigation and outreach to mobile clinics
Strengthening migrants’ autonomy
They managed and referred a total of 1,391 cases to health care services and carried out 6,596 various activities.
The health promoters have locally established themselves as the main point of contact, specializing in assisting migrants to navigate the health system based on their specific needs, from prevention to hospitalization.
These efforts benefited more than 30,000 migrants in Tijuana and Ciudad Juárez.
